An introduction to this special issue of Canadian Review of Studies in Nationalism. The terminology of the articles, all of which address the relationship between ethnicity & politics, is explained, & some problems of the objectivist vs subjectivist approaches taken are briefly discussed. The specific nature of each analysis (see abstracts in this section) is then summarized: J. Yvon Theriault suggests that ethnic & state regulation comprise two competing & incompatible modes of regulation. Yaacov Glickman supports this conclusion through an analysis of the intertwined nature of corporate organization & political restructuring. Jean Leonard Elliott also examines political restructuring & warns that communitarian nationalism should not be construed as simply a less evolved form of nationalism. Gary Caldwell highlights the social contexts in which the expression of ethnicity becomes relevant. Finally, Camille Legendre & William Shaffir examine some aspects of the nationality ethnicity complex operating at the individual level. R. McCarthy
